Mother’s Day for me is a little different this year. It’s no longer just about finding the perfect gift for my mother. This year, I get to be on the receiving end and I have to say it feels extra special. I get to look into my little munchkin’s big eyes and know that right now I’m the center of his world. I’m his everything. And I know to savor this moment, because in no time he’ll be a little more independent and rely less and less on me. Soon enough he’ll be carrying his own bottle and won’t need to be burped on my shoulder as he plays with my hair. Maybe he won’t snuggle on my chest anymore, or tickle my chin with his tiny fingers or put out his chubby little arms towards me in a room full of people. Perhaps he’ll finally grow out of his need to be carried and waltzed around the house as I sing him a lullaby while I mess up all the lyrics. Maybe he’ll finally learn how to drowse off without my constant rocking. But until then, I get to be Baby Luca’s mom so this year, as much I’d like to receive those sparkling earrings or designer bracelet, I know I have the best gift I can wish for. Because I still look at this little guy and it feels surreal that he was in my belly, that we made him and already he has opinions about things. He knows he doesn’t like potatoes but he loves courgettes. He would rather play with Spider Man than the Hulk. He squirms in joy as soon as he spots the water filling up his little tub. He spits out his vitamin D while he welcomes his nasal spray. He squeals when he spots our dog Scruffy and demands his presence especially at bedtime.
I’m finally getting the hang of motherhood and after experiencing first hand just how challenging and rewarding it is. And yes I completely get why Mother’s should have their own appreciation day.
