Frosty Palace: Ivy’s Search For The Best Burger In Beirut Returns

frosty placace two Burgers make me happy. As many of you know I’ve been searching for Lebanon’s best burger since 2010 long before the burger craze swept Lebanon.

And yes, for a while I realized that this little pastime of mine wasn’t doing justice to my waistline. So I gave it a rest. But old habits die hard and now I’m back to my fiendish ways.

I’m not the first to discover or write a raving good review about Frosty Palace. It’s been rated as one of Lebanon’s best burgers. I’m here to confirm that truth. I was there and I saw it too. The rumors don’t lie. That is one brave burger. Its warm fresh buttered bun grabs the little beast inside it with all its gloriousness and almost voluntarily takes the plunge into your mouth.

But before we all climax together let me tell you about this little treasure nestled away in Mar Mikhael’s inner streets. It’s named after the malt shop in the hit musical Grease, except instead of running into Sandy and Danny, the place looks like Audrey Hepburn would be seated at the bar. The décor is delightfully chic and simple. The huge crystal chandelier brings that paradoxical touch of glamour to the setting. Brilliant.

The place is teeny tiny, in a very intimate way. The menu is minimal. My man and I didn’t think twice before ordering the burger on the menu, fine freshly ground Australian beef. Jackpot. Our waiter announced that the mayonnaise and tomato relish (ketchup) were homemade. That got our attention.

We both prefer our burgers the classic way nothing too complicated, so we added some cheddar cheese and ordered them with a side of fries.

As soon as the waiter brought the little beauty out we knew. It sat alone on the plate, but it commanded the table. The patty was at that perfect level of thickness, more on the chunky side of things, just the way I like it. It rest on a bed of lettuce, tomato and some pickles and topped with some of that golden cheddar.

And though I like a generous portion of cheese on my burger which didn’t seem evident, it didn’t matter at that point. Because there was something in the beef that put an end to all those doubts as soon as I locked my fangs into it. It was like finding a long lost love after years of abstinence. I looked over at my man, who had already fallen under its spell and into a coma. Nothing could take him out of it, not even my giant glare signaling him to take it down a notch. Everyone could hear his moans and I was worried they wouldn’t believe this was really about the burger. We wolfed them down in less than ten. We contemplated seconds, but quickly dismissed the urge.

At that point we had completely forgotten about the wide chunky fries.  They had just the right amount of crisp in the bite and softness in the core.  We dipped them in the homemade ketchup and mayo until we scrapped our plates clean.

For dessert I went for the brownie with pecan nuts and caramel topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The brownie was nothing special, but the ice cream was delectable. I plan on going especially for a shake next time I’m in the neighborhood.

So go ahead, treat yourself to a gourmet burger this weekend, but prepare to splurge, a meal for two (burger fries and a soft drink will cost you around 25-30$ per person. It may not be a filet but trust me, this is not your average burger.

Ivy’s Best Burger Search Continues: Fuddruckers

Though summer involves skimpy little outfits and next-to-nothing bikinis it also manages to awaken my inner burger beast. This carnivorous craving led me to Fuddruckers and although I’ve had it many times in the past, I haven’t had the chance to try out it on Lebanon until now. So my man and I drove down to Dbayeh for some serious meaty business.

The Service:

We were greeted and seated by the waiter who ended up pulling a disappearing act on us. So we tried everything to get any staff member’s attention with no avail. They would literally serve the tables facing us and somehow manage to dodge our calls. So after being ignored for a good 15 minutes I frantically began waving both hands in the air and throwing a mini-tantrum. I managed to grab the attention of a server who rushed over apologetically. I was quick to forgive, eager to sink my canines in some home-baked buns.

We started things off with a crisp traditional Caesar salad but substituted the grilled chicken with barbequed medium-sized shrimps. The dressing was generous with a prominent Parmesan flavor.

The Burgers:

We meticulously picked our Angus beef burgers, opting for the specialty selection. My man went for the giant 2/3 pounder with balsamic onions, cheese, bacon and some mushrooms topped with a hearty dose of ranch dressing. This monster isn’t for the faint of heart, but was a love affair waiting to happen.

The Fries:

The party came to a screeching halt with the wedges which looked great at first, but tasted under-cooked and slightly tough on the inside. So I was forced to share my French fries with the man, which also turned out to be quite the bland, stale disappointment.

The Other Burger:

Fortunately my juicy ½ pound burger made up for any starchy shortcomings, with one of thickest patties you’ll find around town featuring an all-time favourite yellow champ of mine, cheddar cheese, shredded romaine , tomatoes and balsamic onions. Classic and original, just the way I like my burgers, fulfilling a long-time craving of mine for the real-deal burger which I’ve been searching for in Lebanon for over two years now, a job my dear friend Johnny Rockets can get done in a heartbeat.

And like a true burger fiend I overdosed on some of that wholesome complimentary cheddar dip and coleslaw at the self service station.

The Service Again:

One would think that after the scene I caused the waiters would be on full alert, but that wasn’t the case. Again, we struggled over and over again, each time we needed a refill or a napkin. It got frustrating by the end of our meal but the staff seemed insistent on being inaccessible. Too bad for a new establishment and totally unexpected from one of the most popular burger joints in the world.

The Price Range: Around 22,000LL for a 2/3 lb burger and fries (including unlimited coleslaw and dip) if you see the size of that burger you’ll understand how reasonable that is. Lunch for two with soft drinks and an appetizer will set you back around 80,000-95,000LL.

The Verdict: Although I have zero tolerance for bad service, the burger is a force to reckon with, so suck it up and have a go.

IVY Finally Falls In Love- With A Burger

There’s a spot in the city I like to occasionally escape to- dating  back to the 1920′s,  influenced by both the Ottomans and the French is the authentic Albergo Hotel, located at the heart of Ashrafieh.  But this is not about their  (oh-so-romantic) suites  rather this is about their tree-friendly rooftop overlooking the city, and more specifically, their  3 Mini-Burgers on the menu.  It’s cruel I tell you, how one could fall so in love with something so small, yet so unforgettable.

I usually make my way to the Albergo’s cozy rooftop for a nice bottle of wine, after a long day at work during Spring time.  I didn’t intend to eat, let alone have a burger. But our eyes met on that menu list, and my curiosity got the best of me, three different  mini- burgers? cheese? onion and tomato?

I never thought I’d be one to be out of words, but the utter joy that came over me as I bit through the precious buns was so overwhelming, I’ve been searching this city in and out for the best burgers it has to offer and all this time,  right under my nose,  I had missed these tiny treasures. So good and sinful, it should be against the law to make them any bigger, surely they’d be  hazardous to your health otherwise. And the fries, the thin, golden, elongated,  crispy on the outside, soft on the inside fries.

IVY’s Search For The Best Burger In Beirut, Next Stop: Burger Nation

Some entrepreneurs invest thousands  of dollars, sometimes millions, in state-of-the-art restaurants hoping with that good food may follow. Others  start-off with a wholesome recipe and a mere grill and end up making some magic. I’m talking about Burger Nation, yes that not-too-shabby little corner spot that had recently opened in Hamra.

I’ve seen the Facebook Ads and the Twitter account (@burgernation) and a review here and there, but to be honest I never really paid much attention. But after an exhausting shopping session in Hamra on Monday, I accidentally fell on it and it sure was one of the most pleasant surprises I’ve had in a long time.

You see, we walk into these hyped up burger joints popping up all over Beirut with big expectations hoping to fulfill our ongoing quest for the best burgers in town only to be disappointed at times, content others, and rarely ever satisfied.

The place was packed. We were greeted by a cheery, bright-eyed waitress who spoke perfect English and genuinely seemed like she loves her job- a quality rare amongst waiters nowadays.  Grass-fed Angus, make your own burger, Belgian fries, I was overcome with sheer happiness.

We started off with some hot crispy coated onion rings that came with two AMAZING dips, ranch and another one that tasted very similar to McDonald’s Big Mac sauce. That set the mood for what was yet to come.

And then,  we saw two beautiful burgers make their way to our table, a 8oz for the big man and a lovely 6oz for lil’ me.  We had ordered them medium-well, brown on the outside, with a lovely pink shade on the inside. Lettuce, tomatoes and aged cheddar sat atop those patties, accompanied by a scoop of coleslaw and Belgian fries.

Where do I begin, to tell the story of how great a burger can be?  The thickness of the patty was superb and the bun was as soft yet sturdy as one would hope. It was big, but not sloppy, and the flavors, went so well together.

The burger was great, but then I tasted the sweet fresh coleslaw, and the just -right fries, ordered some more of that ranch dressing and munched away.  Good for  Burger Nation putting as much importance to getting the side orders right!

Why  am I so impressed?  There is no real kitchen in this place , instead you have a corner behind a counter, with a chef on the grill and another making the burgers. That’s all it took for these folks to make it happen.  And mind you there may be plenty of places in town with a similar concept, ut Burger Nation’s swift service,  friendly staff, to-the-point menu, and most importantly GREAT Burger, got it right.

The Verdict: 8/10

Price Range: 47,000 LL including to Cokes.

Would I go back? I’m on my way right now.

And NO: I did not get paid to write this- although I wish I did! Bisoux

IVY Stops Searching And Makes The Best Burger In Beirut

I haven’t come around to tasting all the recommended burgers, partly because I don’t review food as a profession ( although I wish I did) and partly because although I LOVE me some burgers, for me, burgers come with a certain mood, usually when I’m famished after a long night of partying.

I picked up a couple of freshly ground meat patties while doing some grocery shopping the other day and decided to put my money where my mouth is.  So this may not be the  best burger in town, but it’s as close as it gets to the real thing. Here are some five great tips for making a nice classic burger at home.

Step #1  The Right Bun

It’s gotta be fresh, none of that pre-packed nonsense, rather puffy single buns you can buy from a bakery. Whip-up some low-fat easy spread butter and give’em a nice crispy toastiness in the oven.

Step #2  High Heat

We all yearn for a juicy burger. That means no overcooking but not too much pinkness either- this isn’t a filet after all. So you have to cook your patties on high heat to ensure most of the juices stay inside. I like to pan-fry mine in some healthy 100% virgin olive oil.

Step # 3  Keep It Fresh

I can’t stand the sogginess of a veggie that’s been in the fridge for a week. So if you wanna make this process worthwhile you have to add only the freshest of ingredients.  My favorites are iceberg lettuce, tomatoes and red onions.

Step #4   Real Cheddar Cheese and Caramelized Onions

If you’re gonna waste all your efforts by throwing in a slice of processed cheese then I suggest you just go to McDonald’s (mmm) We have great cheeses in our grocery stores so make sure you get some of that real cheddar cheese. Minutes before you think your burger is done cooking stack some slices over the patty while its in the pan.  Now grab a handful of red onions, spray in some drops of sesame oil and caramelize away.

Step#5  Stack-It Like Its Hot

Don’t underestimate the importance of placing your toppings in a strategic way,any false move and everything couldl fall apart in an instant. Also, you gotta prioritize when it comes to taste. I suggest you work with both buns separately first and then make the heavenly merge. I like mayo on my lower bun, and mustard on the upper one. The ketchup will fall right on the cheddar and patty.

Step#6  Enjoy

And there you have it- The Best Burger In Beirut ;) Bisoux
