Are Your “Friends” on Facebook, Really Your Friends??

I joined Facebook, to connect, share pics and events with my current friends, meaning friends I actually hang out with, who I’ve spoken to in the last couple of months, friends who I like.

I DIDN’T join Facebook to connect with that girl in 2nd grade who I barely said two words to in my life, because I still have nothing to say to her. So just knowing that this person has access or is REQUESTING access to view my profile frankly bothers me.

Or what about the colleague that just started working at your office a week ago and now wants to be your Facebook friend, or better yet that contractor you met with ONLY ONCE  and that you met HALF AN HOUR AGO and sent you a request. The idea of that person going home and remembering to search for my name on Facebook, freaks me out!

The funny thing is some of these people want to be your friend, but it’s not like they EVEN WANNA TALK TO YOU IN THE FIRST PLACE.  It dawned on me this morning that I haven’t EVER spoken to friends who’ve added me for years now. You know why? Because these people are simply just curious to know what ended up happening to you and like to creepily scan through your photos for their own entertainment ( stalker-ish) purposes.  Don’t tell me to limit my profile; my friend’s list on Facebook just went from 465 to 73. 1. i say 73 is much also. if i have to limit my facebook friends to only those that really are friends i’ll trim my list to 1 maybe ;) and if including family also i think the list will go to 10.
    nice post.

  2. ….. and if i do so, then no need for facebook at all

  3. if you want to stay connected to your real friends, then you your phone or email !! and not Facebook !!
Facebook is a socialization tool !! you are encouraged to follow the norm and approve people you know. and if you don’t want them creeping up your photos etc.. you just add them to your limited profile list which enables you to control exactly what they see.

  4. what ure saying is true but then again Jojo has a point. This is why FB has enabled limiting ur contacts. :)

  5. well Facebook’s mission statement clearly states that you “share and connect with the people in your life” and not only “your friends”!

Whatever the objective of facebook (as in its initial purpose when first founded) it is obvious that social trends and norms have shifted and deviated its initial purpose from an alleged, or a SO CALLED innocent social network, to become a tool for stalking, checking the hot girl in you class s photos, or getting some information on your crush’s status, or whatever!

bottom line, FREAKS will use facebook for FREAKY STUFF, it may be true as you claim, BUT DO REMEMBER that normal people like the majority of facebook users do enjoy looking into connecting with their 2nd grade friend and acutally do share memories of good old times!!
when your family is away, you can check their hang out zones, friends, and all!!

Facebook is not the problem, guess who the problem is?

  6. We are! don’t you think?

  7. The issue with fb is that you can adjust your setting however you want. Posers may wish to upload as many albums as they wish about they’re most recent trip to the supermarket, others constantly tell us what they are doing over the weekend (wein el sahra, ma3 min, kam 2aninet champagne per capita), some use it to stalk their ex’s and the potential people they wanna date. But the bottom line is that I connected with oh so many people through facebook and that’s a good thing!

  8. Lebmarketers diagnosis for those who didn’t get our conclusion:

    Facebook could be a need or a want, a luxury or a commodity; Facebook could be either Constructive or Destructive;

It all depends on the motives/objectives/and means for which we use it!

Our Moral of the story: Do not get confused with the format of the tool, whether electronic, on the web, E-based, or a physical format, tools are tools, that is fixed, the variable lies within their objective, and the measn for which WE use them!

  9. seeing my news feed everytime i log-in is truly annoyed me.
why shud i know about a friend who’s going to karaoke or to an accoustic show.
i wanna off that application but don’t know how.
i very limit my fb setting to only friends can access and turn off the search setting.
by facebook i wanna connect with my highschool and college friends, not to some stalkers or someone who told me she was merely going to cinema to watch avatar.
